Ben Sorenson’s wife Maggie died a year earlier, in 1907. Stener’s bride, Bergette, who was Ben’s sister, arrived from Norway in 1908 and they were married in January of 1909. Steiner and Bergette then raised Ben and Maggie’s eight-year-old son, Edwin. The business property was sold in 1911 to Jacob Klev. Later when Stener’s brother Anton became the owner of the store, Stener again found himself in the hardware business, helping to run this store with his brother Anton. David married Cheryl and they have two children, Ashley and Chelsey. Ashley attends NDSU in animal science. 3. Michael married Nona and they have two children, Samantha and Travis. 4. Lisa married Jeffrey Stremick and they have two children, Jackson and Colin. Roger and Darlene were very active in the United Methodist Church; Roger served as a board member and Darlene taught Sunday School. Roger served on the Delger Township board for over 25 years and was a Hurdsfield School Board member. Darlene was a member of the Ladies Aid, and West Ontario Homemaker’s Club. In 1980, Roger and Darlene received the Wells County Soil Conservation award. In 1994, they retired from farming, but Roger continued to help his three sons in their farming. He was a good influence on them. As one son said, “He never interfered with us, but always was there when we needed good advice, and we leaned on him.” Roger passed away suddenly on Christmas Day 2004 and is buried in the Chaseley Cemetery. Darlene passed away in 2016. The Flick Farms of Chaseley has evolved into a large farming and ranch operation run by Roger and Darlene’s three sons. Daughters-in-law, Cheryl and Nona, are active in the farming and the grandchildren also help. Included among the land they farm is Edgar and Jeanne Flick’s farm - the C.C. and Anna Melby homestead land.

Martin died in 1956, and Martha died in 1973.

She has two sons, Stephen and Sean Obituary – Alma Nelson Alma Dora Nelson, 95, a resident of The Dalles, died Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at her home. She was born on a homestead on May 27, 1912, the seventh of ten children to Ole and Dorothea (Braaten Skaar in Wells County, North Dakota. Alma was raised in Wells County, and married George Nelson on October 22, 1939 in Fessenden, ND. In 1956 she and George moved the family to Seattle, and in 1989 she moved to The Dalles. A farmer with her husband, she was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cooking, and had a job for Northwest Airlines as a cook. She was a member of the International Association of Machinists. Her daughter, Audrey Nelson of The Dalles; sister, Mabel Kuehl of Federal Way, WA; grandchildren, Stephen Daggett of Madras, Sean Kangas of The Dalles; and numerous nieces and nephews, survives her. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, brothers Conrad, Harold, Oscar, Thorvald, and sisters, Anna Mattis, Hilda Fryer, Inga Esterholm, and Clara Newman.

In 1881, when she was just eight months old, her parents sold the Melby farm and the whole family emigrated from Norway to Goodhue County, Minnesota. In 1884, his parents homesteaded to Griggs County, North Dakota, and in 1887 they moved to Foster County and farmed there for six years. It was here that her father and older brother Ole helped to establish the Melby School District in 1888 where she attended most of her grade school years. In 1893, her parents moved to the newly opened land of Manfred Township in Wells County where she completed her schooling in 1896 at age 16. Arvid Satterberg, an avid horseman, and his brother John filed on homesteads in Fram Township bordering Manfred Township to the north. Arvid’s land was in Section 26, and in this way Arvid and Mary had the opportunity to meet through living in the same community. They were married around the turn of the century at Manfred and farmed for some years in Fram Township. It is very interesting to note that Arvid and Mary’s land was located in the next section north from Olaf Wolding, he later married Mary’s sister Nellie. Olaf and Nellie moved further west to Hillsdale Township and started a new farm there. Six children were born to Mary and Arvid: Roy, Elmer 1902, Arvid 1904, Ruby 1905, Lillian 1907, and Marion 1909. Five children have descendents;. Marion did not have children. The family later moved further west to Montana for a while, and then on to California. As his health deteriorated, he found it was time to move back to family in Wisconsin and lived with his daughter Debbie, who cared for him until he lost his short battle with cancer. After Don and Shirley were divorced, Shirley married Jim Schisel and Don married Muriel Knodel. Shirley is still living.

It is said that he returned to Norway and spent two years there working to pay off a debt the family had incurred enabling them to come to America. In 1884, his parents moved to Griggs County North Dakota where they had filed on a homestead, and in 1887 they moved to Foster County. Here Ole filed on his own land and started farming. On December 23, 1889, he married Marit Skattebo, known as Mary. Mary was born in Øystre Slidre, Valdres, Norway on September 18, 1872, to Karina Skattebo and Nils Nordtorp. She immigrated to the USA with her family in 1884. They settled at Northfield, MN remaining there three years, before moving to Foster County in 1887. There she met and married Ole. Their only child, Gurina Olava Melby, died in infancy. In 1890, Ole, his father Knud, his uncle T. K. Rogne and others, founded the Melby School District in Foster County. But, in 1892 the crops had failed, so times were desperate. Many, including Ole, found work building the railroad track through ND. As they worked westward through Wells County, Ole and others decided to file on land there in 1893, and then in 1894 moved their families and few belongings. For a number of years, Ole and Mary were busy farming on their land north of Manfred, and Ole owning and operating a threshing outfit for the fall harvest. In addition to farming, Ole also bought grain in the early years. Later he established the Manfred Lumber Company and was also associated in a garage business. Ole and Mary built a home in Manfred in 1903, where they lived the remainder of their lives. They were charter members of Vang Lutheran Church, and very active throughout the years with both church and community. Their financial backing and participation in the community was a significant help to Manfred. Mary died November 8, 1936, and Ole died October 24, 1940. Both are buried at Vang Lutheran Cemetery of Manfred, ND. Story of Mary: Mary Skattebo, at the age of nine, left her native land, Norway, in 1884. She was accompanied by her parents who sailed for America that year. Upon reaching the United States, the family settled at Northfield, Minnesota, remaining there for three years. While North Dakota was still a territory, settlers came in great numbers to file on government land. Each settler was entitled to preemption, a tree claim and a homestead, each consisting of 160 acres. It was in 1887, when Mrs. Melby came with her father and mother to what was then known as the Paradise Prairie, near McHenry, ND. Here she grew to young womanhood, doing her share in overcoming pioneer obstacles. At seventeen she was married to Mr. O. K. Melby, a young farmer of the community. Due to unproductive crops, people moved out in great numbers. In the company of relatives and friends, the young couple came to Wells County and filed on a homestead four miles north of Manfred. Almost sixty years since they settled here, their farm today stands as evidence of the tenacious spirit, of great faith and of the faithful labor so characteristic of the pioneer man and woman. It is one of the thousands of well-improved farmsteads adorning this part of the state. After eight years of successful farming, Mr. Melby established a lumberyard in the little town of Manfred and founded a home there, and this is where they resided until their passing. Mr. and Mrs. Melby were members of the Vang Congregation from its beginning and Mrs. Melby became a charter member of the Vang Ladies Aid in 1896. For a period of over forty years, she was an active member and served as its president for several terms. An ardent worker, she gave much of herself and substance to further the cause of this organization. Especially during the first World War she lent valuable aid to the Red Cross and other community projects. Mrs. Melby passed away in 1936 leaving four sisters and her husband to mourn her loss. She was laid to rest in the Vang Cemetery with the Rev. J. M. Langseth and the Rev. Mehlen officiating at the last rites.

Ole lived on a farm near Manfred. He served in the Army during World War II. Following discharge he returned to Manfred where he lived and farmed the balance of his life. He was a member of Vang Lutheran Church and the American Legion of Harvey. Ole was born in 1906 and died in 1977.
