He was the oldest son of Ole and Inga Braaten. He went to school and was confirmed there, and as a young man he chose farming as his lifelong profession. On February 12, 1913 Oscar married Margit Jorstad at Manfred, ND. They had one daughter, Myrtle. Oscar lived in Manfred, and in 1916 they went to New Town and proved up his homestead there. The family then homesteaded in Unorganized Township 152-93, where they made their home and livelihood for 38 years. They were members of the Grand Valley Lutheran Church and Margit was a member of the Ladies Aid. They moved to Minot and stayed with Margit's sister, Carrie Jorstad. Then in 1954, due to failing health, they moved to Sunland, CA to live with their daughter, Mrs. (Myrtle) Paul Basting. Margit spent some time in the nursing home. Oscar passed away November 19, 1958, and Margit in December 1961. Their daughter Myrtle passed away in 1962. They are all buried in California. Source: Beatrice Gullickson

Fisher building housing Joe Biever's Machinery Business was destroyed - the outer walls of the J. G Renden blacksmith shop next to the implement shop were badly burned. Joe and Kate Biever lived in Fessenden, where he had a Texaco station and Firestone Tire Store. In his retirement years Joe had a store near the school which sold candy and school supplies.The 1961 Fessenden High School Annual was dedicated to Joe. He was a friend to all the students.

Daughter Florence was born in 1910 in Manfred. The above picture was taken of Charles at the lumberyard. There was another girl named Mabel Hanson in school in Manfred in 1908, born in 1896 listed in that household in the school records. They built their home on the property which they sold to Olaf Anderson in 1913. Olaf Anderson built a larger home on this property later. The 1915 census listed the family as living in Medicine Lake, Montana.

Peggy and her husband Fred lived in West Fargo. Peggy passed away in 2015. Louie died in 2008. Rose married Arlie Rud and they lived in Pingree, North Dakota. Rose passed away in 2015.

She brought 6 children into this family ages 14 – 25. Ole Bråtvar was a parochial school teacher in Manfred about 1925. Herbert Ongstad remembers the parochial school being held at the school near the Rogness farm during the summer. A parochial school was similar to our Bible School, but it was taught in the Norwegian language and lasted several weeks. Ole would go to other locations as well throughout the summer holding parochial schools. He emigrated from Norway in 1888, settling first in Wisconsin, and in about 1897 moved to North Dakota. Ole Bråtvar was one of the two people (the other being the pastor) who gave a talk at S. H. Ongstad's Silver Anniversary in the Manfred Lutheran Church in 1929. The Bråtvars lived in Balfour, Bremen and also in Cathay, later settling in at New Rockford. He had a milk route using a one-horse buggy.

Mr. Boese was born Aug. 16, 1920, to Louis and Ella Boese on their farm south of Manfred where he grew up and began farming with his father at an early age. He attended Manfred Public School. On June 16, 1946, he married Evelina Haluska in Chaseley, ND. They farmed in the Manfred area and he also drove school bus for several years. In 1952, they purchased the Manfred Cash Store. In 1956, they sold the store and purchased the R. O. Reistad farm north of Manfred where they farmed until 1986. They remained in the Manfred area until moving to Grand Forks in 2002. He had recently entered the Parkview Health Center, Aneta. Ervin played tuba with bands in the Manfred and Harvey areas over 35 years. He sang with various church and community groups. He served on Manfred and Harvey's school boards, the Manfred Elevator Board, Wells County ASCS Board and was Manfred Township clerk 45 years. He was a member of Church of the Nazarene of Fessenden where he taught Sunday School many years. He was a 4-H leader for a number of years. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Paul (Jane), Tim (Lyn), both Grand Forks; a brother, Wesley, Manfred, a sister, Louella Harrison Ogelsby, Enderlin; and seven grandchildren. Visitation Friday from 2 - 7 in the Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden. Funeral Saturday at 10:30 in Church of the Nazarene, Fessenden. Burial Hillside Cemetery, Fessenden. Evelina Boese Evelina Boese, 87, Grand Forks, formerly of the Manfred area, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at Valley Elder Care in Grand Forks. Evelina Haluska, daughter of Anton and Martha (Draha) Haluska, was born February 28, 1923, at rural Manfred, ND. She received her early education in Chaseley and Bowdon schools, and, following her high school graduation, attended Minot State College where she received her teaching certificate. She then taught in rural schools in the Martin, Harvey and Chaseley areas. On June 16, 1946, she was married to Ervin L. Boese in Chaseley. They made their home in the Manfred area where they owned and operated the Manfred Cash Store from 1952 to 1956. They then purchased a farm north of Manfred where they farmed until their retirement in 1986. In 2002 they moved to Grand Forks. Ervin passed away on August 26, 2003. While living in the Manfred area, Evelina attended the Church of the Nazarene in Fessenden. Since moving to Grand Forks, she has attended the Faith Evangelical Free Church. . She is survived by her sons, Paul (Jane) Boese and Tim (Lyn) Boese both of Grand Forks; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother, Lawrence Haluska of Anamoose; and two sisters, Alvina Bakula of North Hills, CA and Darlene Flick of rural Chaseley. She was preceded in death by her husband; infant son, Loren; her parents; four brothers, Ed, Fred and two infant brothers, Roy and Levi; and one sister, Edna Hattel. Funeral service: Saturday, February 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Fessenden. Visitation: Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden.
