Herb and Mary Vorland were married on October 20, 1938 in Fessenden. The young couple made their first home at the farm with the groom’s mother and brother, near Wellsberg. The Vorlands continued to farm until October 1945. By this time their two children Dean and Sandi were born and it was time to move on.
The Standard Oil Bulk dealership in Manfred was available, and Herbert took on this dealership. At first they lived in the M.K. Melby house, and later moved to the Manfred Parsonage. They were willing participants in the Manfred community, active members of the Vang Lutheran Church, which included the Ladies Aid, Sunday School, Choir, Brotherhood, and other church functions, they were members and officers of the Sons of Norway, and attended all community events.
In 1959 they moved to Fessenden. Herb worked as manager of the men’s department and dry goods departments of the Quarve Store in 1959; they leased the Fessenden Theatre in 1959 as well. In 1960 he was appointed Deputy Wells County Treasurer, and two years later ran for the treasurer’s spot and won. After 22 years of taxes he retired to spend more time with his wife Mary. In 1994 Herb passed away. Mary lived in New Rockford at the Home of the Good Shepherd for a number of years and died in 2014.
